The challenge
The structured media panel held coils of unlabeled cable, a switch resting on the bottom of the enclosure, and four power adapters on one strip. Nothing could be traced.
Existing setup
Builder-installed media panel, unmanaged switch, no labeling or ventilation.
What was installed
- All runs re-terminated on a patch panel and labeled to room
- Gateway, switch and recorder rack-mounted
- Surge protection and proper cable management added
- Vent fan installed in the enclosure
Equipment
- 9U wall-mount rack
- 24-port patch panel
- PoE switch
- Rack vent fan
- Rack PDU
Installation approach
Half a day on site. Each run was toned out to its room, labeled at both ends, and photographed for the homeowner's records.
Result
A panel that can be worked on. Later additions — two cameras and an access point — took minutes instead of an afternoon of tracing.
