Cat6 or Cat6A for a home?
Cat6 is enough for nearly every home. It supports 1 Gb at any household distance and 10 Gb up to about 55 metres, which covers Wi-Fi access points, cameras, streaming, gaming and home offices. Cat6A is worth it only for long runs where you genuinely expect 10 Gb, or in a new build where the added cost is small.
The practical difference
Cat6A guarantees 10 Gb to 100 metres; Cat6 gets there for shorter runs. In a house, most runs are well under 55 metres, so the distinction rarely matters in practice.
Cat6A is thicker and stiffer, which makes it harder to pull through tight retrofit pathways and harder to terminate neatly in a small panel.
When to choose Cat6A
New construction, where cost per foot is a smaller share of the job and walls will not be open again.
Runs to a detached structure or across a large property where lengths approach the limit.
A home office or studio moving real 10 Gb traffic between machines or to a NAS.
What matters more than the category
Termination quality, avoiding sharp bends, keeping cable away from electrical runs, and testing every drop. A well-installed Cat6 run outperforms a poorly terminated Cat6A run every time.
