Wi-Fi coverage outdoors

Outdoor coverage needs its own outdoor-rated access point, mounted under an eave or on a soffit and fed by cable. Indoor equipment aimed through an exterior wall loses most of its signal at the wall.

Likely causes

  • Exterior walls are the barrier

Stucco with wire mesh, brick and insulated sheathing all cut signal sharply. What works on a patio next to a window rarely covers a yard.

  • Open space is deceptive

Wi-Fi carries well outdoors, but only from a source that has line of sight to the area. Coverage from inside the house does not.

Your options

  • One eave-mounted access point

Covers most patios, decks and near-yard areas from a single cable run out through a soffit.

  • Coverage for a larger property

Detached structures, gates and far corners are usually handled with a second access point at that building, fed by buried conduit or fiber.

From the field

Outdoor access points want to be mounted high and pointed at the area people use, not centered on the wall. A pool area is a different target than a driveway gate.

Frequently asked questions

Can an indoor access point be used outside?
Not reliably. Moisture, temperature swings and sun exposure shorten its life quickly.
Will outdoor Wi-Fi reach a detached garage?
Sometimes, but a cable or fiber run to the building is far more dependable.
