How to fix slow Wi-Fi in a house
If speeds are good next to the router and poor elsewhere, the problem is coverage, not your internet plan. The fix is getting a signal source closer to where you use devices — usually one or two access points on cable — rather than a larger router or a faster plan.
Likely causes
Distance and building materials
Every wall, floor, tile surface and foil-backed insulation layer takes signal away. A single router in a corner of the house cannot cover the far end of it, no matter what the box claims.
Extenders repeating a weak signal
An extender rebroadcasts whatever it receives and typically halves throughput doing it. Placed where the signal is already weak, it spreads the problem rather than solving it.
Channel congestion
In dense neighborhoods, dozens of networks share the same channels. Well-configured equipment picks around them; consumer gear often does not.
The device, not the network
An older laptop or a smart TV with a poor antenna will be slow on a perfectly healthy network. Testing from two devices in the same spot tells you which it is.

Moving the router out of a cabinet and toward the center of the house is free and sometimes enough in a small single-story home.
Wired access points
One access point per floor or per zone, each fed by its own Ethernet cable, keeps full speed everywhere and hands devices off cleanly as you walk around.

UniFi and similar systems let channels, power levels and roaming be tuned to the house instead of left at factory defaults.
Wire the devices that matter
Desks, TVs, game consoles and offices are better on cable. Taking them off Wi-Fi also leaves more airtime for everything else.
